Love it or hate it, winter is here and you need to adapt your skincare routine.

Oily skin might think it's great as the cold makes your skin less shiny and sweaty. Dry skin becoming flaky and carrying a large pot of butter in your bag still doesn't work? I hear your pain.

No matter what, a change in seasons, along with other internal and external factors, does affect your skin and can even change your skin type. The chill factor, wind and constant extreme temperature exposure, nice and super warm indoors to subzero outdoors put high pressure on your skin leaving it dull and lifeless.

Here are some simple tips for each skin type on how you can look after it and keep it fresh for that summer day I bet you are daydreaming about it right this moment.

Dry to Very Dry Skin: Double up your skincare!

  • Double Cleanse: First use an oil cleanser to remove make-up and dirt, followed by a mild cream cleanser.
  • Double Tone: Follow up with a toner-serum or a moisturising toner followed by a rich serum/essence.
  • Double Moisturise: After toner, apply an essence/serum, then use a facial oil before or after your moisturiser, or simply combine it with your moisturiser for faster absorption.
  • Exfoliate: At least once a week using mild AHA exfoliants, especially for sensitive skin.
  • Masks: After cleansing and toner, apply a sleeping mask pack to lock in moisture overnight. Use from 2-3 times per week to 4-5 per week depending on how dry your skin is.

Normal & Combination: Switch!

  • Cleansing:  Switch to a mildly creamy and hydrating cleanser! 
  • Toner: Switch your light liquid toner to a toner-serum rich in vitamins.
  • Moisturiser: Switch your lotion to a cream packed with moisture-rich ingredients. Use a light serum, morning and evening before applying your moisturiser.
  • Exfoliate: One to two times per week, use a gentle electric silicone face brush with your cleanser to gently remove dead skin cells.
  • Masks: After cleansing and exfoliating apply a mask sheet or wash off moisturising mask. Apply 1 to 2 per week.

Oily Skin: Improve!

  • Cleansing:  Use mild, cleaners with calming ingredients such as chamomile or honey.
  • Toner: Avoid toners with high alcohol content. Instead, use toners with calming as well as PH balancing effects.
  • Moisturiser: Always use a serum/essence with pore-tightening effects in the morning and evening before applying your moisturiser. This will help keep your pores in check throughout the day. Switch your summer lotion to a light moisturising cream.
  • Exfoliate: 1 to 2 times per week use a BHA exfoliating serum, toner or mask.
  • Masks: After cleansing, apply a pore detox mask 1 -2 times per week followed by a toner, a serum mask sheet and a moisturiser. 

All skin types:

Never leave your house in the daytime without UV protection. Remember, even in the cold weather, the sun may not seem to be burning your skin or never pick from behind the clouds, however, it's radiation still penetrates the skin leading to premature ageing.

During winter we tend not to drink as much water as during the warm summer which is a mistake. Keep on drinking the daily recommended 2l of water per day.

Supplement with Vitamin D and C which are essential in helping nutrient absorption.

During the morning skincare cleanse, use the warm - cold (not hot - freezing) alternate water splash. This helps depuff your skin and improve the blood circulation in the skin.
